The airy feel of this song belies its message.

Though written from the perspective of a young adult, with high school examples, the need and joy of friendship is eternal.

The ancient catechism reminds us that we were each created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Friendship is “vertical.”

Jesus identified His authentic followers as friends.

Scripture is replete with encouragement and even warnings about friendship.

“Let’s be friends” was an appropriate antidote to the then raging war in Viet Nam and is today a timeless reminder of the blessing of friends.

Husbands and wives. Children and parents. Neighbors. Nations - Let’s be friends!

We've been friends now for so many years

Remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.  James 5:20

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  1 Peter 4:8

We've been together through the good times and the tears

If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!  Ecclesiastes 4:10


Turned each other on to the good things that life has to give

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. 3 John 1:11

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.  Jude 1:20

We drift apart for a little bit of a spell

Do not forsake your friend...  Proverbs 27:10

One night I get a call and I know that you're well

Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.  Proverbs 27:6

And days I was down you would help me get out of my hole

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  Proverbs 18:24

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.  Proverbs 17:17

(Jesus) came eating and drinking (spending time with common people), and you say,  ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ’  Luke 7:34
